Lawrenceville History and Demographics

Lawrenceville, being among the fastest growing cities in the U.S is the seat of Gwinnett County. It lies 31 miles northeast of Atlanta and was established on December 15, 1821, three years after Gwinnett Country was formed. The city is named after Captain James Lawrence, a naval commander of the War of 1812 who is still remembered up to date due to his powerful words on his crew ‘Don’t give up the ship’. In 1823, Fairview Presbyterian was built as the first church in town and a year later, Lawrenceville Academy was established. In 1824, the first courthouse was established and the farming community started expanding. Majority of the resident farmed cotton but when the crops were decimated by boll weevils, most of them shifted to dairy farming. The construction of the Southern Railway in 1871 through the Gwinnett County’s northeast section led to business development and population growth. In 1980, the population was 8,928 but doubled to 17,250 in 1990. Establishment of companies, schools and medical centers have contributed largely to the growth of Lawrenceville, and in 2018, it was estimated to have a population of 30,127 and is the 1419th largest city in the U.S. Out of the 30127 people, 37% are white, 22.6 Hispanic, and 33.6 Black.
